The Walton Centre for Neurology & Neurosurgery NHS Trust has a well founded reputation for delivering quality care and treatment. All the staff are committed to the care and treatment of patients, carers and families who require their specialist services. The public, statutory, community and voluntary organisations that work with the trust, value the care and attention paid to the clinical input for each patient. They also appreciate the culture and attitudes demonstrated by the trust, which are enthusiastically built around the partnership activity at the Walton Centre.
The clinical advancements at the trust were established with little or no recognition of the need for underpinning structures and processes. For example, information about service provision and the allied clinical governance issues is variable and fragmented. Staff have differing levels of confidence in the data. The trust is starting to establish the essential structures and processes, but needs to maintain the impetus and increase the numbers of such developments. The trust's goal is to have all the excellent clinical work of the trust underpinned by equally excellent structures and supportive processes. This will then fully enable the clinical governance agenda.
The north west clinical neuroscience partnership is a formal network of the three neuroscience providers, in Salford, Preston and the Walton Centre, and their associated commissioners in the north west of England. The partnership works well and is pivotal to future developments.
The image transfer scheme enables clinicians to view scans remotely for patients being treated at associated district general hospitals. The quality of the electronic images is progressively being improved.
The multiple sclerosis team facilitates a 'one stop' clinic at the Walton Centre, which is valued by patients and their families.

The rehabilitation wards routinely include patients, families and carers in ward rounds and all other care planning processes.
The neuropathology department holds 'open half days' for staff which have been very successful. Established as a response to the enquiries from staff at the trust about various aspects of their work, they have been well attended and informative.
Senior clinicians are committed to categorising and tracking clinical risks.
The trust has a flourishing educational, information provision and general support partnership with Glaxo Neurological Centre, which coordinates the Mersey Neurological Charities Group alliance and is an advice and information centre. It has many benefits for both partners and is valued by patients and their families.
